Prescott Dances of Universal Peace

The Sufi Invocation by Inayat Kahn

Toward the One, . . . the Perfection of Love, Harmony, and Beauty, . . . the Only Being, . . . United with all the Illuminated Souls, Who form the Embodiment of the Master, . . . the Spirit of Guidance.

The Dances of Universal Peace, sometimes called "Sufi Dancing", are spiritual dances based on sacred phrases and movements from many of the religious traditions of the world. A primary intent of the dances is to support and encourage the unity of all religions, bringing together people from many backgounds in the spirit of love, harmony and beauty.

The Dances of Universal Peace are circle dances which include all people—where participation, not presentation, is the focus. The dances are held in an informal way, and participants wear casual, comfortable clothing.

Since beginners are always in attendance, a brief description of the history of the dances is presented. Instructions are given at the start of each dance for the pronunciation and meanings of the words or phrases used, the melody, the dance movements and the concentration for experiencing the qualities of the dance.

To get the best experience from the dances click the How to Dance link.

At the beginning of each dance meeting, we join hands in a circle and often recite an opening prayer—the Sufi Invocation, given to us by Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan. Our musicians take their places in the center of the circle and our dance leaders will lead us in 3-4 dances. We then take a short break, reform the circle, hear any community announcements, and share 3-4 more dances before closing.

The Prescott Dances of Universal Peace are currently held at The Church of Spiritual Living, 3755 Willow Creek Road, Prescott, AZ (Map), at 7:00 pm on the 3rd Saturday of each month. See our Calendar or Dances of Universal Peace pages for scheduled dance locations and other events.
